UMass Dartmouth Student Arrested In Fatal Hit-And Run Crash

An 18-year-old UMass Dartmouth student has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist in Middleborough last month.

    The Plymouth County district attorney's office said Wednesday that Eric Megna of Middleborough will be arraigned Thursday on one count of leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash.

    Fifty-eight-year-old Michael Dutra of Middleborough was fatally struck at about 7 p.m. on Oct. 11.

    Prosecutors said Megna was returning home from the UMass Dartmouth campus when he allegedly struck Dutra, then fled to New Hampshire where his family has a vacation home. They said he told police his SUV was damaged when he hit a deer on the trip.        

    Police said however, parts recovered from his Jeep at an auto body shop matched debris from the Middleborough crash scene.    (Associated Press)
