Tuesday's Convocation at UMass Dartmouth marked the start of the University's school year.

Chancellor Divina Grossman says expanding research on campus is still very much a part of the university's strategic plan.  "Our goal is to transform outselves into a doctoral research university so that we can recruit and retain talent, be a hub for economic inovation, and to raise the quality of life of Southeastern Massachusetts," said Grossman.

UMass system President Marty Meehan made his first visit to the Dartmouth campus since being named President earlier this year.  Meehan said he wants excellence in everything UMass does, and he's committed to working with lawmakers to respond to the needs of the economy in the region.  According to Meehan, "the economy of Massachusetts drives through UMass. We graduate students who have the skills to make the economy work."

Chancellor Grossman also told WBSM News, groundbreaking on the expansion of the School of Marine Science and Technology will take place in October.
