U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges announced on Tuesday that the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth received a National Tier 1 Designation among national universities with a ranking of #220.

Assistant Chancellor of Public Affairs John Hoey told WBSM News the ranking shows that the school is a nationally recognized institution.

"I think what it tells students who are here now, and students who are thinking of coming to UMass Dartmouth, and parents who are thinking of sending their kids here to UMass Dartmouth, is that you're attending a national university with a terrific reputation among our peers around the country," said Hoey.

Hoey says the ranking is even more significant because of how they were rated by two important groups.

"Other institutions like us view us very positively around the country and also we scored very high on guidance counselors in high schools assess us," said Hoey.

This follows a designation the school received earlier this as a doctoral research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

In addition Hoey says that the College of Nursing PhD program was ranked #50 in the country by ValueColleges.
