Former graduates of UMass Dartmouth have stepped up in a big way over the past year, donating $5.2 million to support their university.....

University spokesman John Hoey says the fund-raising exceeded the Univerity's goal of $5 million. He says much of the money will be used to support scholarship programs to help students in need.

Hoey says the largest gift was an anonymous donation of $1.1 million, in honor of Rev. Dr. Robert Lawrence of the First Congregational Church in Fall River. Hoey says that money will be used to fund civic engagement-related programs
