In the wake of the deadly school shooting in oregon on Thursday many residents became concerned about a similar event occurring here on the Southcoast, perhaps at UMass Dartmouth.

Speaking with WBSM's Brian Thomas UMass spokesman John Hoey said that while they can't promise violence will never occur on campus he says the School Department's Police Chief Colonel Emil Fioravanti, works hard to make sure his officers will be prepared.

"Training is his watch word, he makes sure that everyone of his people is highly, highly trained in dealing with situations like this, and other situations," said Hoey.

Hoey also says the school has also maintained close working relationships with other law enforcement agencies who work together to ensure student safety.

"We have tremendous relationships with other law enforcement agencies including the Dartmouth Police, the State Police, and even federal law enforcement agencies," said Hoey "I know our police chief spends a lot of time developing those relationships and forging collaborations with those agencies."

He says they will also be analyzing what happened at Umpqua Community College and seeing what lessons can be learned to improve safety at the UMass Dartmouth campus.

"We'll analyze what happened here and what happened in Oregon and see if there are any additional lessons that can be learned from that," said Hoey "I think that's a matter of course for every law enforcement agency, both at a college campus, but also every community will take a look at this issue and try to learn from it."
