Two men have been rescued but the search continues for a third after their boat sank near the entrance to the Sakonnet River.

The Coast Guard says it received a call at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday from a relative who said the men aboard the 17-foot vessel were overdue from a day trip.

The Middletown Fire Department recovered one man who swam to Sakonnet Lighthouse. A Coast Guard helicopter saved the second man who was found clinging to a lobster buoy about a mile south of the lighthouse. The third man was last seen drifting away from the area.

The rescued men said their engine failed and the vessel was swamped and sank. All three were wearing life jackets.

Several agencies are searching an area of more than 370 square miles.
