Two pets were killed in a Thursday afternoon stove fire in Fairhaven.

Firefighter Wayne Oliveira says the fire was reported at 3 p.m. when a person saw smoke coming from the residence, located at 40 Christian St., and called 9-1-1.

A ladder truck, two engines, and were sent to the home and upon arrival they saw smoke coming from the windows.

One dog and a parrot were killed.

However, firefighters were able to save six dogs.

The residents weren't home at the time and no injuries were reported.

Damage is estimated to be roughly $50,000 and it appears the fire was caused by food left unattended on the stove.

Fire crews were on the scene for roughly two hours and Oliveira says that the two occupants and owners, identified as Joyce and Milton Perry, weren't able to stay in the home and will be with relatives.
