Two dogs were killed after an early morning fire destroys a Fairhaven home.

Firefighter Wayne Oliveira says the fire, at 26 Elizabeth St., was reported around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after the residents were awoken by fire alarms and found the home filling with smoke.

A Ladder Truck, an ambulance, and two engines were dispatched to the scene and Oliveira says that when they arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence.

The seven family members escaped unharmed however two of the family's dogs perished.

Crews remained on scene until 6:30am as investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office helped to sift through the debris to find a cause of the blaze which remains under investigation.

The home has been deemed uninhabitable with damage estimated at more than $250,000.

Mutual aid was provided by crews from Mattapoisett and New Bedford.
