NEW BEDFORD — Members of the New Bedford Police Department narcotics unit were patrolling the south end of the city targeting illegal drug activity when they observed a suspicious activity in a vehicle parked at Sidney Street and Hemlock Street outside Charlie's Convenience Store.

The car then traveled south to Rockdale Avenue and then on to Cove Road. The vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Cove Road and Crapo Street. After further investigation, police located a small amount of cocaine in the vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle was found in possession of a small amount of Fentanyl.

The driver, Valerie M. Carreiro, 30, of 289 Davis St. Apt. 1, New Bedford, was charged with possession of cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

The passenger, Heather Docanto, 25, no known address, was charged with possession of Fentanyl, possession of crack cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

The arrests were made at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday, July 31.
