One of the most dangerous intersections in New Bedford is now much safer.

Traffic lights at County and Cove Streets in the South End went on-line on Friday.

The signals cost about $200,000, funding that was earmarked by State Representative Tony Cabral in a recent transportation bond bill. In a statement released today, Cabral says the "lights are crucial to the safety of drivers and pedestrians" at that intersection.

Between 2000 and 2008, the intersection was the site of over 50 accidents.

The new traffic signals were installed earlier this summer and became fully functional last Friday.
