Tobey Hospital Security Officer Accused of Shooting at Woman and Child in Marion

MARION - A Marion man faces two counts of attempted murder after a reported shooting in the town Monday evening.

Marion Police filed the charges against Joseph E. Singleton III after he allegedly fired his gun at a woman as she was driving west on Route 6 in the area of Gifford's Corner Road. A six-year-old child was in the woman's car at the time of the shooting. Neither of them were injured, but their vehicle had been struck by gunfire.

Singleton was apprehended by Marion Police after crashing his car on the on-ramp to I-195 West after a police chase.

He also faces a charge of other assault, as well as firearm and motor vehicle charges.

Police say the initial call was an apparent domestic violence incident involving shots fired.

A 9mm handgun was recovered from his vehicle. Police say Singleton was properly licensed to own the weapon.

Photos on Singleton's Facebook page depict him wearing a uniform and Southcoast Health security badge.

In a written statement, Peter Cohenno, spokesman for Southcoast Health, says "We are aware of an incident that took place in Marion last night, and are currently working with the Marion police department to gather additional details. While we do not comment publicly on individual personnel matters, in this case, we can share that the individual involved is not scheduled to work and there are no safety concerns at Tobey Hospital."

Singleton is being arraigned Tuesday in Wareham District Court.
