A massive multi-car crash Wednesday afternoon in New Bedford's North End involving a school bus and three other vehicles.

Police Lt. Jeannine Pettiford said in a release, the crash happened around 3pm when an S-U-V heading north on Acushnet Avenue crossed the center line and collided head on with two other vehicles, and then struck a school bus that was attempting to turn onto the avenue from Ohio Street.

Police say the female operator of the S-U-V suffered head injuries and upper body trauma. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

All four occupants of another car were taken to St. Luke's Hospital, along with 28 children onboard the school bus. The children were from three different schools. Three were treated for injuries, the rest were being evaluated.

Lt. Pettiford says the operator of the S-U-V will be cited for a marked lane violation and could face other charges.
