Thirteen people are left homeless following a fire Wednesday in New Bedford's North End.

A Fire Department spokesman says the fire at 330 North Front Street was reported just before noon time and witnesses said smoke could be seen over the North End from miles away.

Firefighters responded and quickly put out the fire, but the spokesman says there was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the tenament.

Its believed the fire started in a rear hallway on the second floor. The cause remains under investigation and the State Fire Marshall has been called in.

The Red Cross is working with the nine adults and four children who were displaced.
