Taunton Man Acquitted in Shooting Death

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) _ A Taunton man has been acquitted of murder in the death of a man who it was determined had been shot before his body was run over by a train.

The Taunton Daily Gazette reports that a jury Thursday cleared Flavio Daveiga of murder in the November 2013 death of Edwin Rivera Jr., but convicted him of witness intimidation for lying to police.

He was sentenced to up to five years in prison.

The 23-year-old Rivera's arm was severed when his body was run over by a train, but an autopsy determined he had actually died from two gunshot wounds before being struck.

Daveiga's attorney said ``justice was served.''

Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn says he's disappointed by the verdict but respects it. He acknowledged that the evidence was circumstantial.
