A house fire late Tuesday afternoon in New Bedford is under investigation.

District Fire Chief Jeff Pothier tells WBSM News, the fire broke out just before 5pm in a duplex at 86-88 Sylvia street, owned by the New Bedford Housing Authority.

"On arrival, we had heavy smoke showing from 86 Sylvia St.," said Pothier. "Engine 8 proceeded to advance a hose line into the building while other companies were searching the building and ventallating," said the District Chief.

Pothier says the fire was quickly contained within 15 minutes.

One occupant, a young man, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Pothier says the fire is under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau, New Bedford Police and the state Fire Marshall's office.

A total of seven people were displaced and the Red Cross was called in
