Police and Fire units were called to the Downtown New Bedford Post Office Thursday evening to investigate a report of a suspicious package at the rear of the building.

The Post Office had received a large envelope with no markings on it, and an object inside.

A Haz Mat team was called to the scene and traffic was diverted away from Post Office for about 90 minutes while authorities investigated.

According to Police Lt. Scott Corola, the item turned out to be not dangerous.

Someone had apparently found a wallet, put it in an envelope, and dropped it into a mail box.  No one was hurt, and the scene was cleared around 8:15pm.
