NEW BEDFORD — A driver trying to flee police was hospitalized after crashing his car into the front porch of a North End home.

New Bedford Police say an officer observed a vehicle traveling north on Herman Melville Boulevard at around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday. The vehicle's headlights were turned off. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle proceeded onto North Front Street and attempted to flee.

The vehicle eventually crashed into the foundation of a home at 176 Ashley Boulevard, destroying the front porch and partially exposing the basement.

The driver, who was not identified by police, was transported to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

Police say the driver will be charged with lights violation, failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

No other injuries or damage were reported as a result of the incident.
