One third of American adults get news through Facebook.  Most of those surveyed by Pew Research Center said they happen upon news while they're checking up on friends on the social media website.

Pew did find that those who call themselves heavy news consumers don't describe Facebook as an important source for news.

A Pew spokesperson says "people go to Facebook to share personal moments, and they discover the news almost incidentally."  The study also found that nearly two-thirds of American adults use Facebook.   (Metro Networks Inc.)
