A New Bedford fishing vessel was towed safely home after becoming stranded off the coast of Cape Cod.

The Coast Guard says that at 11:53 a.m. Sunday a Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstander received a distress call from a crewmember aboard the 62-foot eastern rigged trawler fishing vessel, Challenge reporting engine failure.

Challenge was about 100 nautical miles East of Chatham near Georges Bank with 1000 pounds of scallops and seven people on board.

Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma, which was 170 nautical miles from Challenge, was diverted at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday to offer assistance and arrived on scene at 2:30 p.m. Monday and rigged a tow.

It towed Challenge to Great Round Shoals, north of Nantucket where it met with Tug Morgan around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Tug Morgan then brought Challenge back to New Bedford.
