New Bedford Police are investigating after a store clerk was assaulted during an early morning robbery.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says that at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday a man walked into the 7-11 at 1499 Acushnet Ave. with clenched fists demanding money.

A scuffle broke out involving the 24-year-old clerk and the suspect during which the clerk was hit in the head with a coffee pot from the store.

The suspect then went behind the counter and grabbed several packs of cigarettes before fleeing the store.

The clerk suffered a laceration above the left eye but refused medical attention at the time.

Vicente says the suspect is described as a Dark skinned male between the ages of 18 and 20, 5ft. 6 inches tall, weighing 150 lbs, with a thin mustache.

He was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt tied tightly around his face, black jacket and black pants.
