A gun reported stolen from a firearms shop in Berkley has been recovered in New Bedford.

Police say detectives patrolling the area of Sawyer Street Wednesday night took notice of a man who fled from police when he saw the cruiser approaching his location. Police tried to follow the man, and checked a nearby basement they thought he might be hiding in.

The man was not located, but detectives saw what appeared to be a gun hidden in a sock that had been placed under a boiler. Police recovered the weapon and determined it had been stolen last year from a Berkley gun shop.

Police are still searching for the man in connection to the incident.
