A state trooper injured by a wrong-way driver on Route 6 in Barnstable is expected to be OK.

State police say troopers responded to reports of a driver heading east on the westbound side of the highway at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Two troopers located the vehicle and were slowing traffic behind their cruisers to protect other motorists when the wrong-way vehicle approached and struck one of the cruisers.

The injured trooper, whose name was not made public, was treated and released from Cape Cod Hospital.

The wrong-way driver was described as ``an elderly male with medical issues.'' He was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Police are investigating to determine whether charges are warranted.
