State Senate To Consider New Rules For Transparency

The state Senate is considering a proposed set of rules for the 2015-2016 session that includes efforts to improve transparency.

The new rules, set for a vote on Wednesday, would require the Senate to make a list of bills available to the public two days before any meeting scheduled to consider those bills.

Another change would require that members receive more explanation about amendments offered during annual debate on the state budget.

Newly-elected Senate President Stanley Rosenberg, an Amherst Democrat, has promised greater transparency in the upcoming session. The Legislature has at times been criticized for rushing through bills without enough input from the public.

Rosenberg has also proposed creating three new standing committees in the Senate, including a panel on intergovernmental affairs.
