State senators hope to complete work on a $36.2 billion state budget before the Memorial Day weekend. Lawmakers are begining to sifting through nearly 1,000 amendments proposed to the spending plan the Senate Ways and Means Committee unveiled last week.

The plan for the July 1 fiscal year calls for about $77 million less in spending than the budget approved several weeks ago by the House.

But some additional spending is likely to be added on the floor during debate.
