Wareham and Massachusetts State Police combined efforts to end a three and a half hour standoff Monday without injury.

The  incident began around 2:30pm when Wareham officers were called to an house on Ladd Avenue off Sandwich Road to resolve a child custody issue.

When police arrived, they convinced 33 year old Michael Mendes to free his 19 month old child.

He placed the child outside the apartment, but then barricaded himself inside, and told police he had weapons and wanted to harm himself.

The State Police STOP team arrived on scene and a crisis negotiator attempted to talk Mendes out of the apartment.

Shortly before 6pm, tear gas was fired into the building, and Mendes emerged unarmed and surrendered.

Wareham police say the investigation is ongoing, but no charges had been filed as of Monday night.
