At Thursday night's City Celebrates! New Year's Eve celebration in New Bedford revelers will not be allowed to view the fireworks show on State Pier.

Dagney Ashley, the city's Director of Tourism & Marketing told WBSM's Phil Paleologos that a cargo ship that will be in port this year meaning they had to block access to the pier for security reasons.

However, Ashley says that an excellent viewing location will be available on Union St.

"You can see it easily from Union St. which we blocked off this year," said Ashley "it's blocked off to traffic so pedestrians can walk along Union St. from Water to Route 18."

Ashley says the road closure will begin around 4 p.m.
