Standoff Ends Peacefully In New Bedford

A brief standoff Tuesday morning in New Bedford ends with the suspect surrendering to police.  The incident happened at 17 Austin Court, just before 9am. 

Police were called to the scene by the suspect's girlfriend, who said the man had threatened and shoved her.  When police arrived they learned he had a shotgun in the apartment and refused to give up. 

A crisis negotiator was called to the scene, and a short time later, 44 year old John DeAlmeida surrendered to police. 

Det. Capt Steve Vicente tells WBSM News, inside the apartment officers found a 12 gauge shotgun and three handguns. 

DeAlmeida is charged with assault and battery and a host of weapons charges.
