A 58 year old New Bedford man is facing charges of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon following a weekend stabbing.

Police responded around 9pm Saturday to a reported stabbing outside the Vila Verde Cave on Delano Street.

They found a 47 year old male suffering from a severe knife wound to his right thigh.  The victim was transported to St. Lukes Hospital, was treated and later released.

The suspect had fled the scene in a brown Maxima, but about an hour later, 58 year old Jose "Cha Cha" Barros of Ashley St. turned himself in at the South End Police Station.  A black utility knife was recovered from his car.

Det. Capt. Steve Vicente says the altercation started as an argument between Barros and the victim.  Barros was in court on Monday.
