In the New Bedford area, heroin overdoses have been a huge concern over the years.

In nearby Somerset, on the other side of the Braga Bridge, police arrested two men on heroin trafficking charges Tuesday. One man was transported to a hospital in Fall River to discharge the wrapped bags of the opiate from his system.

According to The Herald News, 26 year-old Jorgé Rosado, of Providence, was charged with trafficking more than 18 grams of the Class A substance. If convicted he will face a minimum of five years in prison.

The suspect was arrested around 12pm Tuesday after making a drug sale to a resident of Perkins Street in southern end of Somerset.

He was then transported to the hospital and received medical care and was monitored by police at Charlton Memorial Hospital until early Wednesday afternoon.

Medical personnel used a laxative-type treatment to force what was identified as 12 double-wrapped bags containing what was believed to be heroin from his body.

“That was combined with 20 bags confiscated from Rosaro’s 2005 Chevrolet Equinox at the Perkins Street home.” This total rocketed to about 25 grams of heroin with a street value in the range of $2,500.

A second man from the home where the arrest took place was also involved in the alleged drug sale.

The second suspect, 30 year-old Bryan King, of 101 Perkins Street, was charged with conspiracy to violate the substance control act and knowingly being present where heroin is being kept.

King’s bail was set at $5,000 on Tuesday and he was released following his arraignment at Fall River District Court. He is scheduled for a pre-trial on February 2nd.
