The Town of Somerset has become the most recent community to establish a designated area for safer online transactions.

The Somerset Police Department announced on their Facebook page Wednesday the new "safe zone" will be located in the police station lobby and front parking lot. These areas are monitored by 24 hour video surveillance.

Somerset joins other SouthCoast communities in creating these safe areas to conduct online business, including Dartmouth and New Bedford.

These "safe zones" allow individuals a safe area to conduct business from websites such as Craigslist and eBay without worrying about becoming victims of a scam or more serious criminal assaults.

Police officers won't necessarily be involved in the transactions, and it is suggested if the other party doesn't want to meet at a police station to finalize your transaction, it can be a sign of shady business.

However, if you do have some illicit deals to make, your local police department sure won't mind if you use their parking lots for those transactions as well.

Anyone with more questions can contact the Somerset Police Department at (508) 679-2138.
