The New Bedford Department of Public Health has announced that sections of East and West Beaches have been reopened for swimming as of Thursday, and the beach inside Fort Tabor Park has been reopened as well.

Those beaches were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday because of elevated bacteria levels caused by heavy rain.

Other beaches remain closed to swimming because of high bacteria counts. They include O'Toole Beach and Davy's Locker Beach off East Rodney French Boulevard, and Kid's Beach, J-Beach and Squid Beach on West Rodney French Boulevard.

Water samples were taken on Thursday and those areas could be reopened later Friday.
