New Bedford kicked off its new solar power initiative Tuesday afternoon in a north end neighborhood.

"Solarize New Bedford" is a new program encouraging residents to install solar panels on their roofs to cut energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

Homeowner Jan Coish has had solar panels on his roof for over a year and says it's the best decision he's made...

Coish has saved an average of $25 a month on his electricity bill and looks forward to more savings.

Boston based Next Step Living is the company installing these solar panels in the city and has teamed up with New Bedford Energy Now to reach out to small businesses and residents to help move the city toward a greener future.

The two groups will be mailing out informational letters and conducting a door to door campaign to spread the word about the benefits of solar energy. Public informational meetings will also be held in upcoming weeks.
