A Sobriety Checkpoint will be in effect this weekend in Bristol County.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Richard McKeon announced that the checkpoint will begin on Friday and be in effect through Saturday.

The checkpoint will be implemented on a public way and will operate during varied hours.

State Police say safety will be assured, the selection of vehicles won't be arbitrary, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety.

The stated purpose of the excercise is to "further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways."

Funding for the Sobriety Checkpoint is being provided through a grant from the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
