The deadline has come and gone, and six people are in the mix for the upcoming special election to fill the vacant Ward 3 seat on the New Bedford City Council.

Election Commissioner Maria Tomasia tells WBSM News the list of possible candidates returning the nomination packet includes Republican state committeewoman and former school committee member Jill Marie Ussach, former Ward 3 councilor Kathy Dehner, former Congressman Keating staffer Hugh Dunn, former Ward 6 councilor Mark Zajac, Guy Larock and Bethany Fauteux.

The Election Commission office will now begin the process of certifying the 50 signatures required for certification of a candidate, which Tomasia believes should be completed by Monday.

Assuming more than two people pass through certification, a preliminary election will be held March 28 before the final election April 25.
