Six New Bedford schools have been honored for reaching 80% participation in the free School Breakfast Program.

The schools are the Hathaway, Hannigan, Kempton, Parker, Pacheco and Jirah Swift elementary schools.

By making the 80% participation rate, the schools stand to leverage additional Federal USDA funds that will make the program self-sustaining.

The schools were presented Healthy Start Leadership Awards this week, along with $500 grants from the EOS  Foundation, a group committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the future of children.

Superintendent Pia Durkin says the District is also working to develop Breakfast In The Classroom for students at both the Gomes School and Carney Academy.
