Workmen outside the Fairhaven Town Hall on Monday began reducing the width of sidewalks around that historic building.

The sidewalks are currently about eight feet wide, they'll be reduced to about six feet wide when the work is done.

The bricks taken out will be used to replace broken or cracked bricks in other parts of the sidewalk.

Some town residents are unhappy with the project. Recently a petition was presented to town officials, listing 85 names opposed to the work.

One man told the Board of Selectmen,  you're taking the history of Fairhaven away, brick by brick.

The work will maintain the herringbone pattern of bricks and has been approved twice by Town Meeting.
