A series of road closures and detours in Fall River have been lifted.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced on Friday that roadway construction and interchange improvements for Route 79, Route I-195, and Route 138 were finished ahead of schedule.

Officials say that this means that both the northbound and southbound side of Route 79 have re-opened to traffic.

I-195 has also seen the re-opening of Exit 5 to Route 79 northbound and Route 138 southbound, on both the eastbound and westbound sides.

In addition the new on-ramps from Route 79/Route 138 to I-195 eastbound and westbound and the new Milliken Connector from Route 138/Broadway Extension to Milliken Blvd. are also open to traffic.

Bicyclists and pedestrians will also be able to use the new shared use paths along the waterfront and connecting Route 138/Broadway Extension to Milliken Blvd.

However, MassDOT officials say periodic, short-term road closures will still occur into the fall of 2016 to allow for the completion of minor roadway and related work.

Also that work will continue on the Braga Bridge portion of the project.
