A Fall River man, convicted of cutting off another man's finger will serve 10 to 15 years in state prison.

Gregg Miliote, Director of Communications for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, announced on Friday that 43-year-old John Soares was sentenced following his conviction earlier this month on charges of mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon--causing substantial injury.

Miliote says the victim in the case, an employee at Columbia Towing in Fall River, was accused of stealing money by his employer, 51-year-old Donna Silvia.

The victim refused to write a confession at which point Soares entered the building and talked with Silvia before taking the victim into the garage who once again denied having anything to do with the missing funds.

Soares then took out a pair of pipe cutters from his bag and cut off the victim's right pinky finger.

The finger was never recovered.

Silvia and two other defendants, her husband, 47-year-old Dennis Silvia, and another employee, 50-year-old James Connors, are still awaiting trial or disposition.

Connors and Silvia are accused of going into the garage and tipping surveillance cameras to face the ceiling.

Silvia and her husband are both charged with mayhem, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon-causing substantial injury and witness intimidation.

Connors is charged with mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon-causing substantial injury.
