Each year on September 23rd, students gather around the flag pole in front of their school before class. Why? To pray. This event started in 1990 at a school in Texas and has gone nationwide. It lasts less than an hour, and a student can openly pray with his or her peers.

"See You at the Pole" is not meant to be controversial. It's simply a way for students of faith to come together and openly pray and give thanks. It's not mandatory, takes place before school even starts, and anyone can join in. Although it started as a Christian ritual down south, there isn't exactly a rule that a person of a different faith can't participate. More than 2 million students are estimated to take part each year.

As a first grade CCD teacher, I personally love the idea. I had never heard of it before, but wish we had something like this locally. I want my little friends to know they can pray anytime, and not just in church or before bed. Allowing young people to practice their faith openly and share it with each other, if only for a day, is a great way to get them excited about it.

So on September 23, 2016....I'll "See You at the Pole!"
