A new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found that most Americans are in favor of having term limits for the U.S. Supreme Court justices, something that would require a Constitutional amendment to happen.

The poll's question asked about a hypothetical 10-year term limit, although discussions on the issue have had legal experts debating terms of eight,10, 14 and 18 years. Two-thirds of those surveyed -- 66 percent -- supported the proposed 10-year limit, while just 17 percent backed keeping the current lifetime tenure. Support for term limits came from across the political spectrum, backed by 66 percent of Democrats, 74 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of independents.

Additionally, 48 percent said they believe the justices should be elected, compared to 32 percent who favor keeping the system outlined under the Constitution of presidents appointing the justices, who are subject to confirmation by the Senate. What do you think of the idea of electing the justices instead of having them appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate?

Are you surprised that two-thirds of Americans from across the political spectrum would favor 10-year term limits for the Supreme Court justices?

Why do you think there is such widespread support for term-limiting the Supreme Court justices, instead of making the positions lifetime appointments, and if you favor term limits for the justices, how many years do you think their terms should be?
