The Buttonwood Park Zoo has lost a member of it's animal family. Sandy the seal was put down after suffering from liver disease for several months.

Zoo staff members had been providing treatments to the male Atlantic harbor seal to try and improve his health and assist in pain relief for the animal.

In a written statement from Zoo Director Keith Lovett, the staff recognized Sandy's condition was not going to improve, and made the difficult decision to euthanize the 33-year-old seal.

Sandy had been a resident at the zoo for twenty years. The average life expectancy of an Atlantic harbor seal is anywhere from 25-30 years.
