A ceremony is planned for Friday to mark the public opening of the Sawmill site on Mill Road in Acushnet.

Thanks to federal and state funding, the former industrial lumber yard near the Acushnet River has been transformed into a park and restored natural area.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition were the overseers of the project on the 19 acre site. They say the public park will protect the health of the river, provide better habitat for fish and wildlife, and give local residents open space to explore.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2pm on Friday and will feature remarks from Congressman Bill Keating and members of the local legislative delegation.
