DARTMOUTH —  Dartmouth Police responded to three separate calls Saturday regarding car breaks in or around the Dartmouth Mall.

During the investigation, Officers David Oikarinen and Adam Rego were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle as a black Mazda 626 with a specific Rhode Island registration.

A short time after the vehicle information was disseminated, Officer Keith DaCosta observed it traveling on North Hixville Road. Prior to being able to engage the vehicle, the operator sped off. While fleeing the area at a high rate of speed, the suspect struck a mailbox, before ultimately losing control and crashing into a large tree.

The male operator was identified as 60-year-old Marcellino D. Alves of Pawtucket, RI.

Because of injuries received in the crash, Alves was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.

Alves was charged with operating after suspension of his license (sixth offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speed greater than reasonable, marked lanes violation, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage.

The car breaks remain under investigation by the Dartmouth Police Department Investigative Services Division.
