Restrictions on Tap for Southern New England Lobster Fishery

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — New restrictions are on tap for southern New England's historic lobster fishery, which is grappling with an unprecedented decline in population.

Scientists have said the population off of southern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut has declined in the face of warming oceans.

The regulatory Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is considering a host of ways to help preserve the species. A report from the commission says that one way to stem the loss of lobsters could be to increase the minimum harvesting size for the crustaceans.

The lobster management board of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission might take action on the issue on Thursday.

New England lobster fishing is one of America's oldest industries. Lobsters have remained plentiful to consumers because of supply from northern New England and Canada.
