New Bedford Police are warning residents about a phone scam that is active in the area.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says people have reported getting calls from someone who stated that a family member was involved in a car accident and had been kidnapped.

The suspects then demanded that $900 be sent via Western Union if they wanted their loved one to be released.

Vicente says that in both cases the alleged missing family members were located and were unaware of the incidents.

It's believed that the scam is originating out of Puerto Rico.

Anyone with information regarding this scam is asked to contact Det. Scott Brown at 508-991-6300 ext. 79508.
