According to multiple reports, including one on the team's own website, the Boston Red Sox have worked out a deal with the San Diego Padres to acquire All-Star lefty starter Drew Pomeranz, in exchange for a top pitching prospect.

Pomeranz, who holds a career 3.66 ERA, has dazzled for the otherwise less-than-stellar Padres so far this season. In 17 first half starts, the left-hander has posted a 2.47 ERA, scattering just 28 earned runs over 102 innings.

The hot start also helped Pomeranz earn his first All-Star bid in his 6-year major league career. After a couple of sub par seasons with the Colorado Rockies, at the beginning of his career, the 27-year-old had put together back-to-back strong seasons with the Oakland Athletics, prior to landing with San Diego.

To pull the young starter away from the Padres, Boston was forced to part with right-handed pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza, who was ranked the team's fourth highest prospect at the start of the year.

The addition of Pomeranz now gives the Sox something they desperately needed for the stretch run; more starting pitching depth. He could figure to slot into struggling starter Clay Buchholz' role or could take over for young lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who's ERA is up around 9.00.
