UPDATE: The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office has identified the deceased as 24-year-old Joseph A. Cerrato III of Middleborough.

UPDATE (11:20 P.M.) - The Middleborough Police Department has confirmed that one person is dead after they were struck by a train in the town on Tuesday evening.

According to a press release from the Middleborough Police Department, police received a notification from MBTA personnel reporting that a train had struck a pedestrian on the Middleborough tracks under the Rt. 44 overpass.

Middleborough Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders determined that a male victim was deceased at the scene.

All 46 passengers aboard the commuter train were evacuated per MBTA accident protocol. The passengers were placed on a Middleborough Public School Department bus and transported to the Middleborough/Lakeville T Station.

No other injuries were reported.

The accident is under investigation by the Middleborough Police Department, State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office, and MBTA Police Detectives.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

MIDDLEBOROUGH - A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a train in Middleborough, according to reports.

The accident reportedly took place just before 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Rt. 44 overpass near Everett Street in Middleborough.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are unknown at this time.

The MBTA Commuter Rail Twitter account alerted passengers to delays on the Middleborough/Lakeville Train 025, saying the train was stopped between Middleborough/Lakeville and Bridgewater due to "police activity on the right of way."


The MBTA continued to update passengers on the status of the delay, and dispatched shuttle buses to transport passengers on delayed trains on the Middleborough/Lakeville route.
