The New England Patriots reportedly made a pair of moves today, to sure up their defensive front.

According to a WEEI.com report, the team has decided to waive defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, who used a breakout performance in training camp to earn a spot on the initial 53-man roster.

Although Johnson showed an ability to make a difference as a pass rusher during the summer, his role during the regular season had been limited so far. Through the first three games of the season, the LSU product played in two games making four total tackles.

While there was early speculation about how the team would fill the vacated spot on the roster, it appears the team has added depth at the same position where they trimmed this morning.

A CSNNE report, claims that the Patriots will be filling the roster spot with former Cleveland Browns' defensive tackle John Hughes. According to CSNNE's Phil Perry, Hughes was released earlier this season, after signing a four-year extension last season.

Hughes also figures to fit into the tackle rotation a little bit better than Johnson did, as he has spent his career as more of a run stuffer, like the team's other three tackles, Alan Branch, Malcom Brown and Vincent Valentine.

Johnson is still practice squad eligible, according to WEEI. With an open spot on their practice squad, look for the team to keep the young defensive lineman around to build on his flashes of success, if he clears waivers.
