There is some good news for New England Fishermen.  A regional fisheries panel meeting in Plymouth has voted to allow ground fishermen to have access to portions of Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine that had been previously closed to fishing.  The vote by the New England Fishery Management Council, allows boats to target species like pollock, redfish and haddock.  Published reports indicate that access would be allowed only from May 1st to February 15, to give fish time to spawn.  Also, all vessels would be required to use approved types of fishing gear.  However environmental groups are already threatening legal action to block any fishing in closed areas.
