According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Boston Red Sox have made another splash into the free agency pool, this time snagging the lefty-mashing outfielder Chris Young.

The specific figures of the deal have not been announced and it is still pending a physical, though it appears that shouldn't cause a snag.

The deal is a bit of a surprise move by Boston's president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, though, as the team is already deep with major league talent in the outfield.

The Sox currently have a starting outfield alignment of Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, and Rusney Castillo from left to right. They also have utility man Brock Holt, who was the team's lone All-Star representative this past season, who can play all three outfield positions. Holt figures to get a lot of opportunities in the outfield as well, as long as guys like Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval can stay healthy.

If that is the case, Young becomes a fifth wheel in the outfield scenario, but Domrowski must have other ideas, if he gave the former New York Yankee a multi-year deal. Maybe this move is one that sets up a move later down the line in which the club packages one of their young outfielders, presumably Bradley, with some other pieces to trade for a top line pitcher.

Young, a career .235 hitter who's hit 169 career homers, had a great year against left-handed pitching last season putting together a slash line of .327/.397/.575. Overall, in 140 games for the Yankees the 32-year-old slashed .252/.320/.453 and hit 14 home runs. He is still a solid defensive outfielder, with experience at all three positions and quality range. He should enjoy peppering the Green Monster at Fenway Park this year.
